日本製品コーナー ・ 第一
9/3/11 – 10:39
I recently realized that if I try to include all of my product reviews in regular entries, I won’t have room to provide thought-provoking commentary on the riveting happenings in my err’day life. Lol.
And so, I have now established a designated post-type called the 日本製品コーナー – nihon seihin koonaa – Japanese Product Corner. (Real original, ね?)
[Also. You know you like my awesome MS Paint skills.]
Format – I’ll usually provide a picture of the product, the going price wherever I bought it, a short video-game-item-like description of its characteristics, pros, cons, and finally a rating out of 10 (10 being I-can’t-live-without-this-in-my-life and 0 being what-deranged-product-designer-thought-this-would-sell.)

チューハイ [chuuhai]
Price: 100-120円
Description: A Japanese version of the Smirnoff Ice, if you will. 4% alcohol and sweet, agreeable taste. Comes in a wide array of flavors including Lychee, Okinawa High-ball, and Autumn Apple.
Good: Cheap way to exercise your right to buy alcohol.
Bad: You would need to drink a whole case to feel buzzed. Some flavors are not as good as others.
Rating: 5.5/10

ファンタメロン [Fanta Meron]
[Picture was stolen from the interweb because I threw away the can before I thought to photograph it]
Price: 80-100円 for a small container
Description: This blog has at least some semblance of tradition. Continuing my search for foreign flavors of Fanta, I’ve come across this one. It tastes like fizzy canteloupe/honeydew mix and is very refreshing.
Good: You can’t find it in America. The novelty is just as refreshing as the taste.
Bad: Just average on the Fanta spectrum.
Rating: 6/10

ポケモンカフェオレ [pokemon kafeore]
Price: 105円
Description: Pokemon being used to advertise coffee flavored milk. Increase that calcium-intake, Pikachu. You go.
Good: It had a Pikachu on it. I mean. I had to buy it. Strong coffee taste with creamy ending […aha.] My bones feel stronger already. CAME WITH A STICKER.
Bad: So little for 100 yen ;_; Had to use a retractable straw device that made it hard to consume the whole drink. Did not make me into a pokemon master.
Rating: 6/10

麻婆春雨サンドウィッチ
Price: 147円
Description: A crustless sandwich 2 pack, designed for quick lunch snacking [YEAH!]. I couldn’t read the kanji on the front so I wasn’t sure what the filling was. It turned out to be some sort of cold noodle and sauce… in a white bread casing. [Edit: Kanji check says that it’s Ma Po (like the tofu) style bean noodles.]
Good: Agreeable taste. Nothing to write home about.
Bad: I hate surprises. Tastes like gas-station sandwich.
Rating: 4/10

Price: 3pk / 60円
Description: Fermented soy beans…Marisa made a video of me trying this traditional Japanese delicacy for the first time. The facial expressions say more than any words I can write.

Good: … Cultural…….experience?
Bad: I… I just can’t.

Crispy M&m’s.
Price: 105円
Description: They are unavailable in America and I was so angry when they discontinued their sale. They sell them here and I am just expressing my happiness that I have found them.

散髪マント [sanpatsu manto]
Price: 覚えていない [I forgot.]
Description: This is not a food product, but it’s a self-grooming aid that I saw at the supermarket. You put it on and it catches the hair that falls when you cut your own hair. If you’re into that sort of thing.
Good: Dylan: “Look how intent that man is on cutting his own hair.”
Bad: Cutting your own hair. [Only because I’ve never tried] Questionable utility.
Rating: 3/10

CRUNKY – Mint
Price: 125円
Description: A mint ice-cream bar with a CRUN[ch]Y chocolate and crisp-rice coating.
Good: I like mint-chocolate. The ice-cream was a good way to beat the brutal heat.
Bad: The ice cream texture was more ice than cream. It was… blue on the inside. Last time I checked, mint is not blue. [Although, the Japanese word for the color is 青い, which means both blue and green.]
Rating: 6/10

チョコチップメロンデニッシュ [chokochippu meron denisshu]
Price: 3個/ 120円
Description: Chocolate chip melon Danish. Melon cream bread is a popular flavor in Japan so they decided to augment it with chocolate chips.
Good: I like chocolate chips. I like melon bread.
Bad: Sweet assault ambush surprise attack. A bit much.
Rating: 5.5/10

And that wraps up the 初版 first edition of 日本製品コーナー. A nice introduction to the wide, wacky world of Japanese snacks, drinks, and other questionably useful products.
